ATEC Carpentry Centre of Excellence

ATEC has officially opened its new $1 million Carpentry Centre of Excellence in a bid to address South Australia’s urgent need for skilled tradespeople. The facility will significantly increase ATEC’s training capacity and better equip apprentices for the real-world demands of the construction industry.
The Centre was unveiled at an event attended by around 70 industry stakeholders, with the Honourable Blair Boyer, Minister for Education, Skills and Training, and South Australia’s Skills Commissioner, Cameron Baker, officially opening the facility. It marks a collaborative effort between ATEC and the South Australian Government to build a stronger, more sustainable trades workforce.
Currently training over 1,500 apprentices—including more than 900 in carpentry—ATEC is the State’s largest private training provider in construction and manufacturing. The new Centre will allow ATEC to double its carpentry apprentice intake to over 1,800, further strengthening South Australia's workforce pipeline and its capacity to meet industry needs.
Spanning more than 1,500 square metres, the new facility features a 750-square-metre all-weather training space, upgraded simulated outdoor areas, and industry-standard tools. The training environment was designed with direct input from industry partners to ensure alignment with current construction practices and employer expectations.
To further support the sector, ATEC is offering three weeks of free apprentice hire for new carpentry host employers. CEO Greg Bassani said the initiative, alongside the new facility, reinforces ATEC’s commitment to training excellence and supporting apprentices from day one, ensuring South Australian businesses and communities benefit from a skilled, job-ready workforce.
