ATEC addresses soaring Tradie Costs and long wait times in South Australia

Posted on December 08, 2023

The Housing Industry Association's (HIA) latest Trades Report has unveiled a concerning surge in the cost of hiring a tradesperson in South Australia, coupled with persistent wait times that have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. In response to this challenge, ATEC, the largest non-government provider of construction, engineering, and electrical apprentices training in the state, has been actively collaborating with the Government and industry stakeholders to bolster South Australia's skilled workforce, particularly in the construction sector.

ATEC has witnessed unprecedented growth across all apprenticeship areas, with a notable emphasis on carpentry. Holding the largest market share of carpentry apprentices in the state, ATEC is dedicated to closing the gap in the shortage of skilled tradespeople. What sets ATEC apart is its commitment to excellence, a core value that permeates every facet of the organisation.

As a proud member of the Housing Industry Association, ATEC acknowledges the invaluable industry expertise and insights provided by HIA. These contributions play a crucial role in helping decision-makers and educators effectively plan and address skill shortages.

ATEC focused on expanding SA's skilled workforce

ATEC’s CEO, Greg Bassani said he was looking forward to continuing to work with Government and industry to expand South Australia’s rapidly growing construction and manufacturing skilled workforce.

“ATEC has experienced unprecedented growth in all apprenticeship areas and further growth will help address the alarming tradie shortage,” explained Mr Bassani.

“There has been speculation that a uni-first culture coupled with a surge in construction projects is to blame for the shortage of skilled tradespeople. While there is certainly a boom in construction, ATEC has seen increased interest in trade careers with many students embracing the lifelong learning journey associated with a trade career,” added Mr Bassani.

Mr Bassani expanded on this by adding that apprenticeships can take you anywhere, – they’re a stepping stone to a dynamic and exciting future career. “Most apprentices embark on lifelong learning once they complete their apprenticeship. Its not unusual for apprentices to start their own businesses once qualified and many go on to study at university,” explained Mr Bassani.

Employing over 80 staff and providing high-quality Training and Group Training services in both metropolitan and regional communities throughout South Australia, ATEC is one of South Australia’s quiet success stories.

All ATEC staff are passionate about the provision of the highest level of training and associated services to ensure that students leave with the maximum potential to be the best that they can be, by utilising skills and knowledge they have obtained through their time with us.

ATEC trainers are all highly skilled in their field of delivery, are industry experienced and are strongly focused on “Changing People’s Lives” as each student begins their journey of skills development.

Proudly South Australian, ATEC has more than 30 years of experience in “Changing People’s Lives” and looks forward to another 30 years, particularly in light of the funding announcement.
