ATEC Apprentice of the Year | Fabricator Whiz Crowned
Posted on March 28, 2026
Congratulations Jake Palmer
28 March 2026
South Australian fabrication apprentice Jake Palmer has been named ATEC’s Apprentice of the Year, capping off an extraordinary year of achievement in the trades. The announcement coincided with the launch of ATEC’s new Engineered for Excellence initiative, which is raising the visibility of engineering trades and highlighting exciting opportunities available in these career pathways.
A recent fabrication apprentice graduate, Jake specialises in custom automotive accessories and high-performance alloy fabrication, including TIG welding for racing and bespoke vehicles. Jake’s work is precise, high-quality, and often on projects where attention to detail is critical, making this an exciting and dynamic career for anyone interested in engineering, fabrication, or hands-on problem solving.
Nominated by ATEC Fabrication Case Manager Dale Rush, Jake has impressed colleagues, clients, and trainers alike with his technical skill, initiative, and ability to tackle complex projects independently. “Beyond his technical abilities, what truly sets Jake apart is his drive to grow and innovate. He shows a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a clear vision for his future. Something that has evolved throughout his apprenticeship journey,” said Rush.
Throughout his apprenticeship, Jake has grown from a quiet, reserved learner into a confident and trusted tradesman. He maintains a professional and safe workshop, and brings a calm, positive presence to every project. He is also planning to further his skills in advanced CAD, drafting, and business development, combining technical expertise with entrepreneurial ambition.
ATEC CEO Greg Bassani OAM said, “Jake is a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and a passion for learning. His success reflects exactly what our Engineered for Excellence initiative is all about, producing exceptional tradespeople, job-ready apprentices and raising the profile of engineering trades across South Australia.”
Jake’s story shows just how exciting and rewarding a career in fabrication can be, with opportunities to work on innovative, high-tech projects that push the boundaries of design and engineering. More information on apprenticeship pathways and the Engineered for Excellence initiative can be found at www.engineeredforexcellence.com.au.
The Apprentice of the Year announcement was made during ATEC’s annual training awards and graduation ceremony held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, South Australia, on 27 March. Presentations included 26 prestigious awards across four construction and manufacturing apprenticeship areas of carpentry, mechanical engineering, fabrication, and electrotechnology.
Right now, Australia is facing a severe shortage of skilled tradespeople in mechanical engineering and fabrication technical trades. Here in South Australia, demand for engineering tradespeople is accelerating, driven by major defence, infrastructure and energy projects already underway. That’s why ATEC, as a leader and the largest private training provider in construction and engineering trade training in this state, has launched the Engineered for Excellence initiative. Excellence isn’t accidental its engineered.
